This podcast used to be one of my favorites! YWA is a great podcast to learn about recent pop culture history, but don’t show up expecting to learn the truth behind these events in most cases, you probably aren’t “Wrong About” them. I’m shocked this was even an episode because so little time was spent talking about the facts, the perception, and where the public went wrong, which is what I thought this podcast was all about. Tom Cruise was comically over-the-top and stood on Oprah’s couch. “You’re Wrong About Tom Cruise Jumping on Oprah’s Couch” caught my eye because I wondered what I had gotten wrong about my memory of this event. It turns out that my understanding of the Donner Party was very much spot-on did I learn more detailed information? Sure. “You’re Wrong About the Donner Party” was a fairly dry retelling of the history of the expedition, with very little debunking included. The podcast is called “You’re Wrong About,” but it might as well be called “you probably don’t know much about this topic so we’re gonna give you a baseline understanding of it.” There’s no discussion of how any of this science is wrong, or misguided, or faked, or misunderstood. Here’s a person that went to jail because the science was bad.” “What do you know about blood spatter analysis? Here’s an example of a guy that said he was an expert, but wasn’t really. The episode mostly consists of the following format: Take, for example, the CSI Junk Science episode. It comes very close to good debunking or setting some sort of record straight, but often falls short of explaining how “we” are “wrong about” the topic. The rest of the episode is then dedicated to merely building on that understanding by fleshing out or emphasizing certain details. While the hosts often set up the premise - “Tell me what you know about this…” - the response is mostly an accurate, general understanding of the issue. I wanted to love this show, but the premise is a lot more interesting on paper than in practice.
